About Laurentian Learning Centre

The Laurentian Learning Centre (LLC) was fully operational in January 2013. The building was renovated to accommodate a variety of Alternative Education Programs for school age and adult learners. The Near North District School Board made this a priority in 2012 to provide programs for At-Risk students and Early School Leavers to attain an OSSD or OSSC.

The Alternative Secondary Program has three teachers and accepts 75 students between the ages of 16 and 19 years of age. These students are engaged in learning to meet their individual needs through a variety of package learning and utilizing the LMS and limited COOP education. It is recommended to expand the staffing by one teacher to expand COOP and Work Experience opportunities for these students.

The Adult Programs include; The Access Program for learners with mental health or addiction issues and is in partnership with the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Lifelong Learning is for adults returning to school and can complete 2 credits in 6 weeks with 6 blocks throughout the school year. We presently employ 2 Continuing Education teachers in this program. The Learning Connection is an adult upgrading program in literacy and numeracy skills funded by Ontario Works and employs three teachers.

The LLC also has provided Continuing Education opportunities on individual basis for adult students in the North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, and Parry Sound and in partnership with our First Nations in the Parry Sound region. We are planning on expansion of Alternative and Continuing Programs in the Almaguin region in the near future on approval of the NNDSB Senior Administration.
